The trailer for “The Substance”—the film that waltzed away with Best Screenplay at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival—is finally here!
Our leading lady, the ever-fabulous Demi Moore, takes on the role of Elisabeth Sparkle, a former superstar who’s seen better days and has just been booted off her fitness TV show by the charmingly despicable studio head Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid. (Seriously, this guy makes your worst boss look like a teddy bear.)
Enter stage left: a mysterious drug called THE SUBSTANCE. Just one jab of this magic juice, and voilà! Elisabeth transforms into the stunning, twenty-something Sue, portrayed by Margaret Qualley. But wait, there’s a catch! (Isn’t there always?) You see, there’s a body-swapping schedule stricter than your grandma’s bridge club: one week as Elisabeth, one week as Sue. No exceptions, no cheat days, no swapping out on alternate Tuesdays. It’s like a timeshare, but with more existential crises.
Naturally, with such a foolproof plan, what could possibly go wrong? (Spoiler alert: everything.)
This cinematic rollercoaster was written and directed by Coralie Fargeat and is set to grace theaters on September 20. Get ready for a wild ride through the wacky world of body-swapping, where mid-life crises meet youthful exuberance in a head-on collision of epic proportions.
