Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot: New Scoobies, New Stakes, and Probably Less 90s Fashion

Buy Me A Coffee

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is coming back! But don’t expect Sarah Michelle Gellar to be drop-kicking vamps front and center—she’ll be there, but this time, she’s passing the wooden stake to a new generation of monster-fighting misfits.

So, what do we know about this reboot? Other than the fact that it’s happening at Hulu and that longtime Buffy fans are currently experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions (excitement, fear, and the unshakable urge to rewatch the original), casting is underway for three key characters!

Meet the New Slayer: Willow 2.0?
According to TV Line, our fresh-faced Chosen One isn’t your typical Buffy-esque, quippy cheerleader-turned-slayer. Nope, the new lead, currently called Nova (but let’s be real, they’re probably workshopping that name as we speak), is a cerebral 16-year-old who’s super smart and a bit of a loner. In other words, she’s more of a “Willow before the magic addiction” type rather than a “Buffy in leather pants doing backflips” type.

Who’s Rolling With Nova?
No slayer fights the forces of darkness alone—except for, like, five minutes before she realizes she needs friends. Enter Hugo and Gracie!

Hugo: An out-and-proud nerd with a hefty trust fund, because apparently, even in the apocalypse, it’s important to have a rich friend who can bankroll the operation.
Gracie: A teenage vampire expert and Buffy the Vampire Slayer fangirl—literally. She’s basically what happens when a die-hard Buffy stan decides to make fighting the undead her whole personality.

Behind the Scenes
This highly anticipated reboot is being helmed by lifelong Buffy devotee Chloe Zhao (yes, Eternals and Nomadland Chloe Zhao), who will direct the pilot and executive produce. Writing duties fall to Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, because rebooting a cult classic takes a team.

So, what does this mean for OG Buffy fans? Well, you’ll either love it, hate it, or spend hours in Reddit debates about it—but one thing’s for sure: The Hellmouth is opening again, and we’re all doomed (in the best way possible).
