Benson Boone is out here baring his soul—and apparently, his abs.
The 22-year-old Grammy-nominated singer has developed a bit of a reputation for losing his shirt faster than you can say “encore.” Whether he’s rocking the stage sans top or turning heads in a speedo, Benson’s body seems to be getting almost as much attention as his music. But don’t get it twisted—he’s not trying to be the next great sex symbol.
In a candid chat with Rolling Stone, Benson spilled the tea on his relationship with his physique, how much he doesn’t think about it (except when he does), and why he simply cannot be the world’s reigning thirst trap king.
The Accidental Strip Show
“I definitely remember a time when I’d rip my shirt off on stage just because I had no idea what else to do,” Benson admitted. Relatable. “Like, what do you do with your hands when you’re standing there singing? Oh, I know—yeet the shirt.”
But over time, he started to notice a pattern. “After enough concerts, you kinda figure out what people like and don’t like. What makes the crowd lose their minds? What makes girls scream? There’s an art to making an audience go absolutely feral,” he explained.
Still, Benson doesn’t want his concerts to turn into some kind of muscle flexing extravaganza. “One, I don’t have the ‘guns’ for that. Two, that’s just not my thing,” he confessed. “I don’t want people buying tickets just to see if I’ll take my shirt off—it’s a concert, not a Chippendales show.”
### The Burden of Being Hot (Or Not)
Despite his occasional shirtless antics, Benson says body image is definitely something he struggles with.
“It sucks to focus on that all the time,” he admitted. “I’m super hard on myself, and if I start nitpicking my appearance, I spiral. Like, should my arms be bigger? Should my shoulders be broader? Should I shave my head and start over? It never ends.”
And while he’s committed to working out and staying in shape, he’s drawing the line at being The Ultimate Sex Symbol™.
“Dude, it messes with my head so much,” he said. “Yeah, I want to stay fit, but I can’t be the world’s top thirst trap—I just don’t have it in me. That’s not who I am.”
So, if you were hoping for Benson Boone’s next album to come with a six-pack calendar, you might be out of luck. But hey, at least the music’s good.
Oh, and in case you missed it, Benson just dropped his latest single, “Sorry I’m Here for Someone Else.” (Not a song about his abs. Probably.)
