Angela Bassett has some thoughts on her 2023 Oscars loss, and honestly, same.
ICYMI, the 66-year-old powerhouse was up for Best Supporting Actress for her iconic performance as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. But instead of the Academy handing her the well-deserved trophy, they said, “Nah, let’s give it to Jamie Lee Curtis.” And just like that, history was made—but not in the way we wanted.
Now, Angela isn’t the type to throw a tantrum (unlike some of us when we saw the results), but she did admit that losing stung. Last year, she described it as “a supreme disappointment,” which is basically the classy way of saying, “Y’all played me.”
In a new interview with Town & Country, Angela looked back on the moment she realized she wasn’t taking home that golden statue. And spoiler alert—she was not thrilled.
“I found it interesting,” she said, which is code for “Oh, so we’re doing this today?” She went on: “Interesting that I wouldn’t be allowed to be disappointed at an outcome where I thought I was deserving.”
Say it louder for the people in the back!
Angela explained that she wasn’t just hoping for the award—she had put in the work. “No, I have put in: put in the time, put in good work over time,” she clarified. “I didn’t think that was a gift. I thought it was a given.”
Translation: She did what needed to be done, and yet…
To be clear, we love Jamie Lee Curtis, but if Hollywood operated on pure talent and merit, Angela’s Oscars shelf would be bending under the weight of all her trophies. Here’s hoping the Academy gets it together next time—because we are NOT doing this again.
