The New York Jets have made a move that has everyone in the NFL clutching their helmets and gasping for air. That’s right—Woody Johnson, who sounds like a character straight out of a cowboy movie but is in fact the Jets’ owner, has decided to fire head coach Robert Saleh after just five games into the 2024 season. Yes, five. That’s fewer games than it takes to finish binge-watching a season of Love Is Blind.
Now, we all know it’s not totally unheard of for a team to send their coach packing after a string of losses. But doing it this early in the season? It’s like breaking up with someone halfway through the first date because they ordered pineapple on their pizza. Sure, it’s controversial, but give it a minute!
The final straw? A game in London where the Jets got absolutely clobbered by the Minnesota Vikings, who, let’s be honest, have been on fire lately. And by “on fire,” I mean the Vikings were burning the Jets’ defense like a marshmallow left too long over the campfire. It was rough. It was crispy.
All this comes after what was supposed to be the comeback of comebacks. Aaron Rodgers, their quarterback and honorary superhero, was back from his Achilles tear like some sort of bionic man, ready to lead the Jets to victory. But apparently, hopes and dreams crumbled faster than a cookie in the hands of a toddler.
Robert Saleh, bless his heart, took the reins back in 2021. In his time with the team, he managed a 20-36 record, which is… well, it’s not great. But hey, in Saleh’s defense, it’s the Jets! Getting a winning season there is like trying to win a game of Monopoly without flipping the board—pretty much impossible.
So here we are, five games into the season, and Saleh is on his way out, probably wondering if he can get his old job back as a high school gym teacher. As for the Jets? Well, their playbook might be changing, but one thing remains the same: they’re still really good at keeping things… interesting.
Saleh came in for work this morning as usual and was informed by Jets owner Woody Johnson of the decision. https://t.co/bxNTFS8vlm
