Could Taylor Swift waltz into Only Murders in the Building and solve mysteries with her magical song lyrics? Well, if you’re holding your breath, it’s time to exhale and maybe sit down with some calming tea. But, hey, her bestie Selena Gomez was asked anyway, because why not?
If you’ve been living under a rock (or perhaps just not obsessively following every move of the world’s most famous people), Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez have been BFFs for like, a bajillion years. They’ve been through it all: music, movies, mystery-solving TV shows… well, maybe not that last one. Yet.
So naturally, when someone from E! News was searching for a scoop and decided to ask Selena the million-dollar question—Is Taylor Swift about to Sherlock her way into the show?—Selena responded in the most Selena way possible: “You’re hilarious. She’s a little busy, you guys.”
Translation: “Taylor is out there conquering the universe, one sold-out stadium at a time. So, no, she probably doesn’t have time to come solve fictional murders.”
But wait, plot twist! Steve Martin, the grandmaster of dry humor and one of the stars of the show, swooped in with his own dramatic interjection: “Listen, she calls us every day. Here—she’s calling right now. Ahh, I’ll take it later.”
Yes, you heard that right. Steve Martin wants you to believe that Taylor Swift has them on speed dial, just casually blowing up their phones. Maybe they’re secretly forming a crime-fighting band—Selena sings, Steve cracks jokes, and Taylor… well, Taylor just is.
Then Steve got all serious (because even comedians have their moments) and said something very profound about the holy union of Taylor and Selena. He mused, “Here’s how I unite Taylor Swift and Selena. Taylor handles everything perfectly, and so does Selena. Politically, trolls, everything—she just seems to have this wisdom about doing things quietly, effortlessly.” Deep, right?
Selena was clearly blown away by Steve’s speech. “I wish I was recording that to send to her,” she said, probably thinking, “This needs to be framed and turned into an inspirational poster.”
And while Taylor Swift isn’t (yet!) cameoing in Only Murders in the Building, the Hulu series has officially premiered! So, if you’re hoping for a pop-star detective crossover, you’ll just have to wait. But until then, enjoy Steve and Selena’s delightful banter… without Taylor. For now.
