Mindy Kaling is setting the record straight, people! There’s been a lot of chatter about Meghan Markle over the years—some say she’s secretly a royal mastermind plotting world domination, others think she’s just really, really good at finding flattering lighting. But according to Mindy, one of the biggest misconceptions about Meghan is that she’s, well… fancy.
That’s right. The woman who married a literal prince, lives in a Montecito mansion, and probably owns at least one cashmere robe is actually not high-maintenance at all. Shocking.
In a recent interview, Mindy, the queen of self-deprecating humor and snack hoarding, spilled the tea (Earl Grey, obviously) about her good pal Meghan.
“I think a misconception about Meghan is that she’s in any way fussy or has expectations of fanciness,” Mindy confessed to Time. “She really is a down-to-earth person who knows a lot of fun tricks to make entertaining and cooking easier.”
Translation: Meghan is the kind of friend who won’t judge you for serving boxed wine, but she will make you feel bad about your sad snack selection when she whips out a charcuterie board she made from scratch using figs she grew herself.
Meghan Markle, The Life Coach We Didn’t Know We Needed
Mindy also revealed that Meghan is basically a lifestyle guru, casually dropping wisdom like some kind of chic, modern-day oracle.
“I love cooking, but I’m really not good at entertaining,” Mindy admitted. “I don’t know anything about how you’re not supposed to use overhead lighting when people come over. You’re supposed to use little lamps.”
Little lamps? Is this a thing? Have we all been ruining our dinner parties with harsh ceiling lights while Meghan Markle hosts soirées bathed in a warm, golden glow like some kind of Renaissance painting?
Mindy, being a woman of the people, confessed that when it comes to kids’ parties, she just buys paper decorations from the party supply store. And while Meghan doesn’t judge (or does she?), she did teach Mindy some “simple ways” to throw a homemade kids’ party. Presumably, these simple ways involve sourcing organic fruit from your private orchard and making artisanal cupcakes while effortlessly glowing.
Meghan Markle: The Ultimate Maternity Leave Fairy Godmother
Apparently, Meghan’s generosity knows no bounds because she invited Mindy over while she was on maternity leave with her third baby, Anne.
“I was on maternity leave in March and April, and Meghan texted me that she was doing a show where she was going to cook for her friends,” Mindy revealed. “Would I want to come to Montecito and have her cook for me?”
Let’s just pause for a moment to absorb this information. Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, personally invited Mindy Kaling over to cook her a meal while she was deep in the trenches of new-mom exhaustion. This is next-level hospitality. This is the kind of support we all need in our lives. Where is my duchess friend offering to cook for me when I’m drowning in laundry and sleep deprivation?
And it didn’t stop there. Meghan sent Mindy home with a basket of fresh produce, homemade jam, and hot sauce.
SHE. MADE. HER. HOMEMADE. HOT. SAUCE.
Forget the royal titles. Meghan Markle is the friend we all need. With Love, Meghan premieres on Netflix on March 4, and honestly? If she’s handing out life hacks, sign us up.
