Marlon Wayans is diving headfirst into fatherhood and his new standup special, *Good Grief*. Spoiler alert: it’s as hilarious as it is heartfelt.
The 51-year-old comedian and actor sat down with People to dish about his latest comedy escapade, which takes a deep dive into his personal life and his journey to understanding his transgender son.
“These days, I’m like an open book on stage,” he shared. “Seriously, why did it take me so long to do standup? Now it’s my therapy. Life throws lemons, and I’m here making the zestiest lemonade with a punchline. I’m on a mission to save myself, one joke at a time.”
Marlon’s the proud papa of three kiddos: sons Kai, 24, and Shawn, 22, with his ex Angela Zackery, and a bouncing baby girl, Axl, 18 months, with ex Brittany Moreland.
When his eldest, Kai, came out as transgender, Marlon admits it was like binge-watching an entire season of emotional growth in just one week. “I went from ‘Wait, what?’ to ‘Okay, cool!’ faster than I thought possible. That week, I leveled up in life. I learned that the real magic of kids is teaching you the art of unconditional love. Bottom line: as long as my kid is happy, I’m happy.”
His standup isn’t just about cracking jokes; it’s a masterclass in life lessons wrapped in laughter. And guess what? His son is totally on board with it. “I’ve got a deal with my kids: ‘Whatever you do, remember there’s a good chance it’ll end up in my act.'”
Marlon’s tight-lipped about his current drama with ex Brittany Moreland over their daughter Axl. “No public mudslinging here. You don’t have to stay together to ensure your child grows up without the Jerry Springer theatrics. Every kid deserves a peaceful upbringing,” he wisely noted.
