Kendrick Lamar’s surprise album GNX has critics frothing at the mouth like they just tried Lil Wayne’s infamous cup of lean. But there’s one person not exactly vibing to it: Lil Wayne.
On Saturday (November 23), Weezy decided enough was enough and addressed some spicy Kendrick bars from the album’s opening track, “Wacced Out Murals.” And let’s just say, Wayne’s response came with the energy of someone who just found out his leftovers were eaten.
In the song, Kendrick gets all introspective and a little shady, referencing the backlash over his upcoming Super Bowl halftime gig. Apparently, people are big mad that he got the spotlight instead of Lil Wayne, whose hometown of New Orleans is hosting the event. Kendrick didn’t hold back:
“Used to bump ‘Tha Carter 3,’ I held my Rollie chain proud/ Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down/ Whatever, though, call me crazy, everybody questionable/ Turn me to an Eskimo, I drew the line and decimals,”
Translation: I used to vibe to Wayne, but now I’m the Super Bowl MVP, and sorry if you feel some type of way about it, bro.
Kendrick, never one to keep it subtle, followed that up with a lyrical flamethrower:
“Won the Super Bowl and Nas the only one congratulate me/ All these n-ggas agitated, I’m just glad they showed they faces/ Quite frankly, plenty artists but they outdated/ Old-ass flows, tryna convince me that you they favorite/ This is not for lyricists, I swear it’s not the sentiments/ Fuck a double entendre, I want y’all to feel this shit.”
Basically, K.Dot said, “Y’all are dusty, and I’m over it.”
Weezy’s Counterpunch
Lil Wayne wasn’t about to let Kendrick’s lyrical heat go unchecked. Hopping on X (formerly known as Twitter, but let’s be real, still Twitter), he unleashed an oddly poetic clapback:
“Man wtf I do?! I just be chillin & dey still kome 4 my head. Let’s not take kindness for weakness. Let this giant sleep. I beg u all. No one really wants destruction, not even me but I shall destroy if disturbed. On me. Love.”
Hold up. Did Wayne just casually drop a threat that sounds like it belongs in an ancient scroll? Yes. Yes, he did. It’s giving Game of Thrones meets the local bodega philosopher.
Wayne’s message didn’t come out of nowhere, though. Back in September, the Young Money mogul had shared a heartbreaking Instagram video, practically playing the world’s tiniest violin over not being picked for the Super Bowl. “Hurt” and “broken,” he confessed the snub felt like a betrayal in his own backyard.
The Internet Reacts
Wayne’s peers wasted no time chiming in. Nicki Minaj said, “Wayne IS the halftime show.” Birdman threatened to “put some respeck” on Weezy’s name. Juvenile and Master P probably dusted off their Hot Boys jerseys in solidarity. Meanwhile, fans were divided. Team Kendrick thought Wayne was being dramatic, while Team Wayne started drafting an NFL boycott petition.
It’s unclear if Kendrick and Wayne will squash the beef or if we’re looking at the next great rap feud. Either way, the Super Bowl halftime show just got a whole lot more entertaining—and it hasn’t even happened yet.
