Lena Dunham is at it again! The 38-year-old queen of multi-tasking has cooked up a new TV series. But here’s the twist—she’s passing the torch to another star and stepping out of the limelight herself.
Yes, you heard it right. Lena co-created a rom-com extravaganza called *Too Much*, which, surprise surprise, is semi-autobiographical. But instead of hogging the screen time, she’s handed the lead role to the hilariously talented Meg Stalter from *Hacks*.
In a candid chit-chat with *The New Yorker*, Lena spilled the beans on why she’s playing the fairy godmother instead of Cinderella this time around.
“So, it’s this saga of an American gal in London who’s just been dumped in New York and is more confused than a chameleon in a bag of Skittles. She stumbles upon a punk musician who’s in rehab, and they try to figure out if they can stitch together a life. It’s not rocket science. But from day one, I knew I wouldn’t be starring,” Lena said, twirling her imaginary mustache. “For starters, I saw Meg Stalter’s work and was blown away. She’s got the funny bone of a stand-up comedian and the dramatic chops of Meryl Streep. It’s like, whoa, Meryl’s got competition! Meg’s got this vibe that makes you go, ‘Oh, there’s an angel in the room.’ Not a resting bitch face in sight. Nope, it’s resting angel face all the way!”
But wait, there’s more! Lena’s decision to step back also stems from a desire to keep her mental health in check and avoid another round of body-shaming public dissection.
“I wasn’t up for another *Girls* rerun of having my body dissected like a frog in a high school lab. Tough call, but I knew Meg was the one. Admitting it to myself was the real kicker,” she said. “I used to think winning meant bulldozing ahead and not giving a hoot about opinions. But guess what? Winning actually means looking out for numero uno and doing what keeps the creative juices flowing.”
“And despite what the gossip mill might churn out, I got into this biz to be an artist. Attention was never my jam, believe it or not. Sure, my work might scream ‘look at me,’ but that’s not the real me. Creating is my power source. It’s my true love, right up there with my nearest and dearest, my pets, and my beloved books.”
Lena Dunham is choosing sanity, self-care, and the art of stepping aside for talent. Meg Stalter, it’s your time to shine!
