Kerry Washington Confirms ‘Unprisoned’ Has Been Cancelled By Hulu After 2 Seasons

Well, it’s official! Unprisoned has been given the pink slip faster than you can say “cancel culture.” On this fine day, September 27, our beloved star Kerry Washington dropped the news that Hulu has decided to give the show the ol’ heave-ho after two seasons. Talk about a plot twist!

In a heartfelt (but slightly tragic) Instagram post, Kerry said, “Ladies & Gents, that’s a wrap on Unprisoned. We put our hearts, souls, and probably some of our snacks into this show, and now it’s sadly not returning for Season 3. But hey, I wanted you to hear it from me first because, while we’re super-duper disappointed, we’re also incredibly grateful. Making this show was like running a marathon with a mouthful of peanut butter—hard, sticky, but ultimately rewarding. Plus, we know a ton of you found some serious feels with The Alexander Family, and their chaotic energy will live on forever (or at least until the next show gets canceled).”

Kerry went on to shower gratitude like confetti at a New Year’s Eve party: “We are soooooo grateful to the entire cast & crew, who are not just brilliant but also a joy to be around—seriously, they make group lunches a blast! Big shoutout to our fellow producers, writers, and directors for leading us through this creative jungle with inspiration and snacks. And of course, a gigantic thank you to ABC, Hulu, and Onyx for giving us a home to air our quirky little family drama. But most importantly, thank you to YOU, the viewers! Whether you were laughing, crying, yelling at your screen, or doing the macarena during the show, it was a blessing to have you along for the ride. We appreciate you ❤️!”

To sweeten the pot, Kerry included some behind-the-scenes shenanigans featuring her co-stars Delroy Lindo, Faly Rakotohavana, Marque Richardson, Jordyn McIntosh, and Jee Young Han. Because if you can’t have a show, at least you can have a montage, right?

For those who missed it, Unprisoned was inspired by the real-life rollercoaster of creator Tracy McMillan. It followed the gloriously messy life of Paige Alexander, a perfectionist therapist, social media influencer, and single mom whose world got flipped upside down when her dad, Edwin (a.k.a. Delroy Lindo), decided prison was overrated and moved in with her and her teenage son Finn. Because nothing says “family bonding” quite like dodging awkward conversations about incarceration!

Unprisoned first hit the airwaves in 2023, with its second season launching in July 2024. Sadly, it seems it won’t be making any further seasons—much like your New Year’s resolutions, it just couldn’t stick around. So, here’s to the show that brought us laughter, tears, and the occasional eye-roll. Cheers! 🍷
