Drew Barrymore recently had a heart-to-heart about how the movie Blink Twice turned her life upside down—well, in a good way, or at least in a “this movie made me rethink my life choices” kind of way.
So, this flick, penned and directed by Zoe Kravitz (her directorial debut, if you’re keeping score), is about two women who head to a private island with a billionaire. Spoiler alert: the island is not a tropical paradise but more of a twisted “surprise!” party with a side of graphic sexual violence. Definitely not your average getaway.
During a lively chat with Zoe on her talk show, Drew shared that the movie was like a mirror reflecting all her past blunders, specifically her blackout drinking phase. She said, “Watching this movie was like having a therapy session with a popcorn bucket. There’s so much substance stuff in the film, and it hit me like a ton of bricks—mostly the kind of bricks you’d throw at your past self for making questionable decisions. I realized that my past self was basically a blackout drinker, which is a fancy way of saying I was often drunk and confused. This film was like a wake-up call, making me forgive myself for all those ‘hold my beer’ moments and the cringe-worthy situations I landed in. I’ve been sober for five years now, so watching this was not just about the mayhem on-screen, but also about all the mayhem I used to put myself through.”
Blink Twice was less of a film and more of a self-help seminar wrapped in a thriller.
