22-year-old ‘Stitches’ superstar Shawn Mendes is publicly apologizing to singer Sam Smith, 28, for calling Sam a HE!
During the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Concert which aired on The CW, Shawn introduced Sam’s performance and called the ‘Too Good at Goodbyes’ singer a HE! Sam has publicly said that he is genderless and is not a HE, therefore he wishes to be referred to as ‘they/them.’ More on that here.
Shawn realized his mistake the next morning and publicly issued an apology to Sam via Instagram Stories. Shawn wrote: “Oh @samsmith I’m so sorry for referring to you as a ‘he’ for your jingle ball introduction. It absolutely slipped my mind. Wont happen again…Sending you so much love! Also you absolutely are one of the funniest people I’ve ever met! We’re all learning together 🤍🤍 Happy holidays, all my love xx…” Both Shawn and Sam are part of the same record label group – Universal Music – with Shawn being signed to the sub-company Island Records and Sam to Capitol Records UK.
