34-year-old ‘Grrrls’ artist Lizzo is opening up about changing the lyrics to the hit song!
In an interview on ‘The Breakfast Club’ – interviewer Charmalagne the God said he was “mad” at Lizzo for changing the lyrics and caving into fans’ demands because it originally contained a derogatory term…In the original version of ‘Grrrls’ Lizzo uses the word “spaz” to indicate that she was going to lose control. The word is based on spastic diplegia, a form of cerebral palsy, a condition that causes motor impairments in the legs or arms. Fans and disability advocates called on Lizzo to change what they called an ableist slur. A few days later by June 14 2022, the major music streaming services had substituted the original version of the song with one that replaces the line with “Hold me back.”
Lizzo stated to ‘The Breakfast Club:’ “It’s a nuanced conversation. For me, everybody is talking about it now, there are think pieces everywhere. I thought, what’s the best thing I can do? I can say my opinion on it and just add to everyone’s opinion or I can do something about it.” Watch below and let us know what you think of Lizzo changing the lyrics to ‘Grrrls:’
