Lisa Kudrow just gave an update on the Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion sequel, and let’s just say, the reunion planning committee is still figuring out the guest list.
Lisa, the 61-year-old Friends legend (aka Phoebe Buffay, patron saint of Smelly Cats), starred alongside Mira Sorvino in the cult-classic 1997 comedy about two BFFs who would literally glue themselves to fashion greatness.
Back in December, Mira dropped a juicy nugget of hope: there’s a script for a sequel that’s this close to getting the Hollywood thumbs-up. But hold your feather pens—it’s not greenlit yet. During a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Lisa confirmed Mira wasn’t just talking out of her pink faux fur jacket.
“She nailed it,” Lisa told Drew, sounding as pumped as someone discovering their 1980s prom dress still fits. “We’re as close as we’ve ever been. There’s a script, and it’s really good. Robin Schiff wrote it.” (Yes, the same Robin Schiff who wrote the first movie, proving that lightning can strike twice—assuming the studio doesn’t fumble this harder than Romy’s job interview scene.)
While Lisa didn’t slap a big fat “COMING SOON” sticker on the sequel, her optimism could light up an entire high school gym. “So, it’ll happen,” she said before throwing in the classic Hollywood disclaimer, “I mean, we’ll see.” (Translation: Pray to the movie gods, people.)
But wait, plot twist! Did you know the original wasn’t always destined for the big screen? Lisa revealed that Romy & Michele started as a play, almost became a TV show, and then finally turned into the iconic film we all know and quote relentlessly. Who knew this story had more twists than Romy’s patented dance moves?
So, while we’re not booking our reunion outfits just yet, it’s safe to say fans are ready for more glue guns, ridiculous outfits, and life-changing lessons about what really matters (hint: friendship and maybe a little business acumen). Stay tuned for updates, and don’t forget to RSVP to the sequel of our dreams.
