It’s happening, Coco 2 is on the way! That’s right, Pixar is diving back into the Land of the Dead, and we’re all about to get emotionally wrecked all over again.
Disney and Pixar confirmed the news on March 20, meaning the next time you cry uncontrollably over a Pixar movie, you’ll at least know you were warned. The highly anticipated sequel is set to hit theaters in 2029—which, let’s be real, feels like 100 years away, but at least it gives us time to emotionally prepare.
Disney CEO Bob Iger Dropped the News Like It Was No Big Deal
During The Walt Disney Company’s annual shareholder meeting, Bob Iger casually dropped the bombshell, saying:
“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure.”
Translation: Get ready for another visually stunning movie that will make you laugh, cry, and question why Pixar insists on destroying our souls.
Iger also added, “And we can’t wait to share more soon.” Okay, Bob. But can you at least tell us if we need to start emotionally preparing for another gut-wrenching song like Remember Me? Because some of us are still recovering from the first one.
The Dream Team Returns—Because Duh
The sequel will reunite the masterminds behind the original, including director Lee Unkrich, co-director Adrian Molina, and producer Mark Nielsen. That’s right, the same geniuses who made us weep in 2017 are back at it again, ready to toy with our emotions like a mariachi band playing our heartstrings.
A Quick Recap of the Movie That Ruined Us in the Best Way
For those who need a refresher (or just love a good nostalgia trip), Coco introduced us to Miguel, a 12-year-old boy with a deep passion for music—unfortunately, his family was allergic to fun and had banned music for generations. Naturally, Miguel accidentally stumbled into the Land of the Dead, where he uncovered the true story of his family history.
The film was an absolute masterpiece, earning two Academy Awards (Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Remember Me), a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and every other trophy you could possibly throw at it. It also secured its place as one of Pixar’s most emotional films, right up there with Up, Toy Story 3, and that one time we thought Lightning McQueen actually died in Cars 3.
What Will Coco 2 Be About?
No one knows yet! Will Miguel be jamming with the ancestors again? Will the Land of the Dead introduce a new ghostly rock band? Will we need therapy after watching it? All very valid questions that Disney refuses to answer at this time.
One thing’s for sure: if Pixar doesn’t hit us with another soul-crushingly emotional ballad, we’re demanding a refund.
See You in 2029!
So, mark your calendars, stock up on tissues, and prepare your heart for another unforgettable trip to the Land of the Dead. Just, you know, try not to cry—or do, we won’t judge.
