Artifice has for the longest time been a key element of a musician’s appeal, and many of the songs on “Born to Die” are even enhanced by imagining Lana Del Rey as a character: a sexy and sad, but always dramatic, 50s starlet.
Listening to “Born to Die”, it’s tempting to put forth theories on what exactly brought about such appealing melancholy and why many have pinned her a talentless major record label robot from the very start.
If Del Rey was a talentless major-label plant from the start, then “Video Games” probably wouldn’t have had the stylish panache that it did, and much of the hate the talented singer is receiving on the same blogosphere that catapulted her to success in the first place is irrespective of her undeniable talent.
Overall we’re willing to give this album a solid A-
