The end of the three-day-long labour day weekend officially marks the end of summer and the transition into fall.
Gone are the days of taking the afternoon off to hit a rooftop patio or two and drinking yourself into oblivion.
For those of us with jobs the advent of fall marks eight hours a day of, if you hate your job – endless toil and turmoil, and if you like it – caffeinated bliss.
Either way they’re some days when hours behind the screen or cubicle are just too much to bear.
For such days and just hours when you’re in need of some much needed entertainment we’ve decided to compile a lists of tracks and television shows that will hopefully provide you with the much needed perk to get through the daily grind.
Now we know watching a 40 minute show at work doesn’t make much sense so we’d say save it for the evening with an accompanying TV dinner, but you could do it circa lunch-break time as well.
1. Justice – Audio, Video, Disco
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Audio, Video, Disco is the latest single from the Grammy-award winning french duo Justice off their second album of the same name. Being avid Justice fans and lovers of † we love the direction the duo is headed in, which Xavier de Ronsay described to Exclaim.ca as: “a disco opera, although it’s probably less disco in the sense that we didn’t make it so key”. We’ve taken a listen to the album in its entirety and we definitely find it a lot softer and less agressive than †. Have you listened to Audio, Video, Disco and if so what do you think of their somewhat softer sound?
2. The Magician ft. Jeppe – I Don’t Know What to Do
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
We’ve been looping this particular one for the past couple of days and think it would be a good addition to your fall play-lists. It won’t exactly perk up your day significantly but it’s something nice to power-walk to, plus the chorus is so catchy you might end up singing “I Don’t Know What To Do” to your significant other during your next altercation.
3. Theophilus London – I Stand Alone
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
We first heard this track on one of the teaser’s for HBO’s How to Make It In America, which also happens to be amongst our list of must-watch TV. Plus the video for I Stand Alone only recently arrived and you can watch it below; we’re loving his outfits especially the multi-flag belt at 1:06
4. James Vincent McMorrow – Higher Love
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
For those days and weeks when “things look so bad everywhere” look to James Vincent McMorrow’s cover of Steve Winwood’s Higher Love to give you a much needed boost. This track will not only make you feel good but its lyrics will also help you put things into perspective this fall. James Vincent McMorrow is an Irish folk singer and songwriter from Dublin and his music closely resembles that of Sufjan Stevens and Bon Iver.
5. The Whip – Secret Weapon (Alex Metric Remix)
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Our favourite one by far from this list and a sure perker-upper. If there was a phrase to summarize the effect of Alex Metric’s remix of The Whip’s Secret Weapon it would be the audio form of caffeine. We’ve always loved Alex Metric especially after hearing his edit of Fenech Soler’s Lies.
1. Ringer
We’re so excited for the return of the iconic Sarah Michelle Gellar to television and she’s coming back in full NYC glamour.
In the CW’s Ringer (trailer above); Gellar plays a woman who, after witnessing a murder, goes on the run, hiding out by assuming the life of her wealthy identical twin sister – only to learn that her sister’s seemingly idyllic life is just as complicated and dangerous as the one she’s trying to leave behind.
Ringer premieres Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 9/8c and we’re already counting down the days.
Will you be watching Ringer and are you excited to see Buffy, sorry Sarah Michelle, back on television?
Even though NYC is a far cry from Sunnydale we’re anticipating intense surges of nostalgia.
2. How to Make It In America – Season Two
We absolutely loved season one of HBO’s How to Make it in America and happy can’t even begin to describe what we felt when we heard it would be returning this fall.
Check out the trailer above and make sure you tune in on October 2nd for a few tips on how to perfect your own hustle, NYC style of course.
3. Hart of Dixie
How much did you love Summer on The OC?
And how much more do you love Rachel Bilson?
Well then stay tuned to The CW this fall because she’ll be returning to television without the curly haired sidekick whom we also loved dearly, but we’ll still tune in anyway.
Hart of Dixie premieres September 26, immediately following Gossip Girl and centres around a fast-talking New Yorker and brand new doctor, Zoe, who has her life all figured out – after graduating top of her class from medical school, she plans on following in her father’s footsteps and becoming a cardio-thoracic surgeon.
But when her dreams come crashing down, Zoe decides to accept an offer from a stranger, Dr. Harley Wilkes, to work with him at his small practice in Bluebell, Alabama…to find out more about the show you can check out the show’s official site here.
We love Rachel Bilson and can’t wait to see her in a scrubs ;D
We hope you found something amidst our lists of must listen tos and must watch television shows to entertain you for the next coming months.
If they’re any other tracks or shows that you feel should have made this list then feel free to post them in the comments section, or if you feel like publishing a list of your own simply click here.
