It was blue-sky thinking for Karl Lagerfeld, as he treated guests to a luxury jet-set experience in Chanel’s spring-summer collection on the second day Tuesday of haute couture week.
Lagerfeld spends enough time in the air to eventually think it might be a hoot to stage a Chanel show inside an airplane.
He has had icebergs hauled to Paris.
He has created farm scenes, a formal garden and a monument to the quilted bag, all in the Grand Palais.
What’s an airplane, with a drinks cart and fake clouds floating past the windows?
According to a Tweet from Derek Blasberg, Lagerfeld said he wanted to watch a fashion show on an airplane “instead of a boring old movie.”
He told the Telegraph’s Lisa Armstrong, “I love flying. It’s the one time I can escape. I don’t have to talk; everyone around me is watching screens. I can be alone. It’s perfect.”
The show consisted of succession of day suits followed with subtle sequin embroidery, in tones of navy, royal or pale blue — and glittering heels to match each exact shade.
Come evening time, and with each dress, the fabrics grew more intriguing and the glittering embroidery richer — with intricate patterns sometimes repeated just below the hem on the model’s tights.
